A BRIEF HISTORY OF MATTANUR HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL

Sri AV KESAVANNAMBISAN

In the second quarter of the twentieth century Mattanur had become famous as the headquarters of the Brahmin Landlord Brahmasri P.Madhusoodanan Thangal who was a member of the Madras Provincial Legislative council from the year 1929 to 1934 and later a member of the malabar District Board .Mattanur was also noted for its active participation in 1940 in the protest against the British imperialism and oppression. Considering its importance and the large number of the school going children of the locality and the neighbourhood ,either the Madras Government or the Malabar District Board ought to have established a high school at Mattanur at least in the forties of the last century. But they did not do so.Malabar District Board had establshed  higher elementary school with standard from 1 to 8 in the building provided by Sri.PM Thangal.Under these circumstances, the people of Mattanur eagerly desired to see the existing board higher elementary school upgraded to a High School. The desire of the people was shared by Dr. M.K. Achari who was the Medical Officer at the Mattanur Rural Dispensory run by the Malabar District Board. He convened a meeting of
the prominent persons of Mattanur to consider the possibilities of upgrading the Board Higher elementary district Board Authorities. This was the official effort for a High School at Mattanur. Later in 1951 when the Firka development council meeting was held at Mattanur, the issue of the High School came for discussion and gained prominence among the development programmes. The North Malabar District Educational Officer who had attended the meeting realized the seriousness of this popular demand. I had reported it to the District Board President. But the district Board had no funds to establish a new High School. So the President deputed the Mattanur firka member Sri.K.T.Balakrishnan Nambiar to know personally whether the people would make available the resources required for establishing a High School. On 13th July 1952 Sri. K.T. Balakrishnan Nambiar convened a meeting of the eminent citizens of t he Mattanur Firka at Board Higher Elementary School to consider the above matter. In his introductory speech K.T.Balakrishnan Nambiar stated that the district board fully share the feelings of the people in respect of the high school and added that it could not do anything on its own because of lack of funds. Upgrading the higher elementary school would be impossible because that was being run in small rented buildings. A high school would require about 10 acres of land and to construct building for class rooms, staff rooms, Office rooms, laboratory and play grounds as per the Madras Education. A larger sum of money would be required for construction work and purchase of furniture, library, laboratory articles and sports goods. If the people could make available the land and enough funds the district board would establish a high school and manage it. This was what the District Board would do in the matter. Thus it was left to the matter to decide what should be don. The people who had assembled there were altogether disappointed and some of them were angree too. The meeting was interrupted for some time with angree shouts and commands. “some thing must be don. What should be done, what could be don?” all people began to thinck and exchange ideas. It was a challenge before the people. Heated discussions went on” . “The district board ought have establish the high school even without people’s demand”. “it should not escape from its primary responsibilities.” Thus some of them passed comments. They were looking at Sri. M.P. Moidu Haji expecting some words of consolation from him as if he was born and brought up to solve the problem. As expected a Sri. Moidu Haji stood and firmly declared. We should rise to occasion and undertake this challenge namely, responsibilities of establishing a High school so that children should not be denied high school education any longer”. It was acceped by all. At once an adhoc committee was formed to do everything necessary to establish a high school at Mattanur and hand it over to the district board. The committee consists of following persons: 1. Sri.M.P. Moidu Haji - President
2. Mayan Ali Haji - Vice President
3. P.A . Moosakutty Sahib - Member
4. E.K. Mammu Haji - Member
5. V.R. Nair - Treasurer
6. K.T. Govindan Nambiar - Secretary
7. V.K. Gopalan Nambiar - Asst. Secretary.
8. P.K. Sukumaran - Member
9. Alakkatu Achuthan - Member
10. K.Narayanan Nambiar - Member
11. V.K. Achuthan Nambiar - Member
Sub committies were also formed for the following villages with conveners noted against each.

5. Pattanur : Sri. P.R Kelappan Nambiar
6. Kizhur : Sri K.P ramachandran Nambiar
7. Chavasseri : Sri. N.K Govindan Nambiar
The adhoc committee adopted the following methods to rise the funds
1) By directly approaching every citizen in the firka and collecting money according their might
2) By requesting the PCC Co-operative Society members to transfer their share amount to the high school fund.
3) By performance of drama.
4) By requesting the neighbouring panchyaths to donate liberally to the high school fund by applying for aids from Block development funds and government.
Sri. V.K. Paithal was appointed to approach by individuals and make collections. A society named Mattanur High school society was registered as number for of 1953 under the societies registration act XXI of 1860 with the objectives of establishing a high school handing over the Malabar District Board. With in a few months the society collected a remarkable some of money, purchased about 13 acres of land by the side of Tellicherry coorg road near Palottupalli. And made a security deposit of Rs. 10,000/- by purchasing national savings certificates. While the work was thus progressing the district board informed the society that it would not undertake the management of the school because of financial restriction imposed on it by Madras provincial govt. in view iof the fast approaching state reorganization. It was disappointed information. However the managing committee of the society decided ahead with the objective of establishing a high school of its own and running it under the committees management. Necessary amendments made in the constitution of the society. As per these amendments any person who had contribute Rs.100/- or more would be a member of society and general body of such members would elect from among themselves a committee consisting of eleven members for managing the affairs of the school. The secretary of the committee would be the manager. The committee was reconstituted as follows. 1. Dr. B.K. Nair - President

The permission was received on 02-06-1954 with great rejoice the committee made arrangement to strat the High School.
